Attached is a picture of a CFL light bulb. These light bulbs have been in the news as of late. Known for smelling of smoke after only a few minutes of use, there have also been reports of flames (up to 4 inches) spewing out of the side of the ballast like a blow torch! A bulb was taken to the local Fire Department and the firefighter wasn’t at all surprised and said that it is not an uncommon occurrence. The firefighter stated that sometimes when the bulb burns out; there is a chance that the ballast can start a fire.
After researching on the internet similar reports, it seems that bulbs made by “Globe” in China seem to have the majority share of the issues. Several of the fires concerning these bulbs have been blamed on the misuse of the CFL bulbs. These bulbs are not intended to be used in recessed lighting, pot lights, and dimmers or in track lighting. The picture of this bulb was installed in a normal light socket!
